Project Background

Senior care robot hold great promise。With the accelerating global trend of aging populations, the demand for high-quality senior care services is on the rise. YYD, a leading company in the senior care sector, recognized the need for an innovative solution to enhance the quality of life for the elderly. The goal of this project was to develop a smart senior care robot that could provide companionship, health monitoring, and other essential services. By leveraging advanced AI and IoT technologies, this product aims not only to meet the needs of the elderly but also to set new standards in the industry.

Solution

OPD Design was selected as the partner to provide a comprehensive end-to-end solution, ensuring every aspect of the senior care robot was meticulously designed and executed. Our solution includes eight core functionalities:

  • Fall Detection: Real-time monitoring of the elderly’s movements using advanced sensors and algorithms, with immediate alerts sent upon detection of a fall.
  • Autonomous Person Finding: The robot can autonomously locate and follow the user, ensuring their safety and providing assistance when needed.
  • Safety Reminders: Regular reminders for home safety, such as turning off gas, locking doors, and other important tasks.
  • Remote Presence: Video calling functionality that allows family members to remotely check on the elderly and interact with them.
  • Guardian Service: The robot is available 24/7 to respond to the user’s calls and needs.
  • Medication Reminders: Timely reminders for the elderly to take their medication, with records of their medication intake.
  • One-Touch Video Call: A simple button press initiates a video call, making it easy for the elderly to communicate with their family.
  • Automatic Recharging: When the battery is low, the robot automatically returns to its charging station to ensure continuous operation.

Project Process

Step 1

Industrial Design

Our team worked closely with YYD to understand the specific needs and preferences of the elderly. We conducted multiple brainstorming sessions, gathered extensive user feedback, and developed several design concepts. Each concept was thoroughly evaluated, and we ultimately selected a design that is both attractive and functional. We paid special attention to details such as rounded edges, easy-to-use buttons, and an intuitive interface to ensure that the elderly could use the senior care robot effortlessly.

Step 2

Mechanical Design

Our mechanical engineering team performed detailed CAD modeling and simulations to optimize the internal layout of the senior care robot. We chose lightweight yet durable materials to ensure the robot is both sturdy and easy to move. Special attention was given to the placement of the battery, sensor layout, and drive system to ensure all components work seamlessly together while maintaining a compact and lightweight form. Through multiple iterations and tests, we ensured the best possible design.

Step 3

Hardware Development

We collaborated with multiple suppliers to choose high-quality sensors, processors, and other critical components. For the fall detection feature, we specifically selected high-precision accelerometers and gyroscopes. The autonomous person-finding feature relies on a combination of LIDAR and cameras. We conducted extensive testing to ensure all hardware components work seamlessly and meet the expected performance standards. Continuous debugging and optimization ensured the reliability and stability of the senior care robot hardware.

Step 4

Firmware Development

Our firmware engineers wrote the required code to make the hardware components work seamlessly. This included sensor data processing, motor control, and communication protocols. We conducted rigorous unit and integration testing to ensure the stability and reliability of the firmware. By simulating various usage scenarios, we identified and fixed potential issues, ensuring the senior care robot firmware performs excellently in real-world conditions.

Step 5

Software Development

We developed a user-friendly interface and integrated various software modules, including fall detection, safety reminders, remote presence, and medication reminders. The software design is intuitive and easy to use, especially for the elderly. We used a modular approach, allowing each function to be developed and tested independently. Through multiple user tests, we continuously improved the interface and user experience, ensuring the senior care robot software is both powerful and user-friendly.

Step 6

Prototyping and Testing

 We fabricated multiple prototypes and conducted rigorous testing to identify and resolve any issues. We invited several elderly individuals to participate in the testing, collecting their feedback and making improvements based on their input. During the testing, we particularly focused on the accuracy of the fall detection and autonomous person-finding features, as well as the overall system stability. Through multiple iterations, we refined the senior care robot design, ensuring the final product meets all requirements and performs excellently.
